Perfume and freediving
May 4th, 2008, Posted in eng, diving, stuffWatched a movie called Perfume day before yesterday. Besides some really cool scenes and a “make love, not war” group orgy with a catholic pope at the end it got me thinking about human memory.
For example the guy in this movie had eidetic memory on scent. Meaning he can recall every single scent he has ever smelled. Can You imagine? Every bloody scent in the world. I can’t. I can, but I know that I would go instantly insane.
Got an article about eidetic memory from ebsco and surfed the net in the morning. Most of the research results I found were based on remembering something visual, very few on other sensory experiences and nothing with scent. So nothing scientific to say.
But when You think back on some situations - they actually are associated with a scent. Or if You smell a familiar scent, You instantly recall some situation associated with that scent. Simple, isn’t it?
I remember some scents very clearly. At least one particular and also the owner it. Even after two months :)
Went snorkeling to Sheikh Coast for the last time yesterday. It turned out to be a good freediving practice instead. The maximum depth I reached was 15,6 meters below surface without air.
It’s kind of mind thing again. When You start to think on the bottom, how little air You have left or how far away is the surface, a small micro-panic can bite ones ass easily. Instead, it’s far more easy not to look up or think about the air. I looked at different fishes and imagined myself as one. If they don’t need air, I don’t need also :)
Will leave Egypt tonight and be at home in Tallinn tomorrow morning. Insallah
